Set the Net

Recipes and snapshots of life in Bristol Bay, AK

Thursday May 1, was my last day working for the AK Dept. of Fish and Game and as an appropriate send off, I flew along on one of the season’s Togiak Sac Roe Herring Fishery’s herring biomass surveys. I got a few shots of the fleet in action, and a little – spring is here reassurance!

The herring are here, which means the salmon are coming, which means nets need hung, the boat needs fired up and life is about to get crazy!

Here are the gillnet boats working in Kulukuk Bay, these are 32 ft. Bristol Bay drift boats. Most come over from from Togiak, Dillingham and Naknek to participate in the fishery.

Here are the drifters again and to the right are some tender vessels, larger boats that will offload the gill net catch and deliver it to at-sea processors or shore plants in Dillingham, Naknek or Togiak.

It was a beautiful day!
